How to choose the right watch size for your wrist

Diameter is only the beginning. Case length, thickness and strap design all influence how a watch feels and looks on your wrist.

How to choose the right watch size for your wrist

A watch can look perfect in a close-up and feel very different on your wrist. Start with how you intend to wear it, then check its actual dimensions. There is no universal size rule: comfort and your preferred proportions matter most.

Start with a watch you already wear

Measure your wrist with a flexible tape without pulling it tight. Note the diameter of a watch you find comfortable. This gives you a more useful reference than a photograph alone. When shopping online, ask for a wrist photograph or a short side-view video of the exact model.

Three dimensions worth comparing

  • Diameter: the width of the case, usually stated in millimetres and often measured without the crown.
  • Lug-to-lug length: the distance between the ends of the case where the strap connects. This helps you judge whether the case will sit comfortably across your wrist.
  • Thickness: affects the watch's presence and how easily it fits beneath a shirt cuff.

Look at the dial and bracelet too

A large dial with a narrow bezel can make a watch appear bigger than another model with the same diameter. A rigid first bracelet link can extend the overall fit, while a flexible leather strap may curve down sooner. Compare front and side views rather than relying on one number.

Find your fit with Which Watch

Set your budget, then use search to narrow the brand, range and movement. Check each product's listed measurements and contact us if the case length or thickness is missing. We can help confirm the details before ordering. You can also inspect your purchase on delivery to check that it matches your order.
